What happens if you inhale ceramic?

Inhalation of ceramic materials, especially silica, can damage the lungs. Free crystalline silica is present in clay bodies from trace to 50% amounts and can cause irreversible loss of breathing capacity. Workers must not inhale dust or fumes from them and should never smoke with traces of these substances. Silicosis is a lung disease caused by inhalation of fine silica dust which pottery has a high risk of. The amount of time that silica dust stays in the air depends on how much it was exposed to and how long it takes for it to settle out.

Inhaling ceramic dust can be hazardous, as it contains free crystalline silica which can scar lung tissue and cause irreversible loss of breathing capacity. The inhalation of kaolin, a type of clay, can also result in kaolinosis, a disease in which the lungs become mechanically clogged. Firing of glaze materials in electric and gas kilns can produce fumes of toxic materials such as lead, antimony, cadmium, selenium and precious metals. Carbon monoxide from fuel-fired kilns or the combustion of organic matter in clays is highly toxic by inhalation and can cause oxygen starvation.
Inhaling too much silica dust can cause health issues and permanent lung damage. To reduce the risk of inhaling silica dust when using clay and glazes, air circulation should be enhanced to allow clay particles with silica dust to flow out of the room and be replaced with clean air. Eating, drinking, and smoking should also be avoided while mixing clay or glazes to reduce the chances of ingesting or inhaling silica dust.
